On Mac OS X it would be great if windows tagged as "non-modal" could behave in the same way as native "palette" Mac OS X windows.

In particular, non-modal windows should have a smaller title bar and should be hidden automatically when the app is not active.

This would contradict the FTLK OS transparent interface rendering objective.
This said, it would be interesting to have such ' hide when inactive' feature, but then we should develop this feature for all platforms, not sure it wil then fit the 1.3 timeline objectives.

I would like to have a simple interface for purpose-based window classes. Fl_Toolbox_Window would be one which would then have the correct visual clues on any platform. Other classes could be Fl_Document_Window, Fl_Floating_Window, Fl_Backdrop_Window, and maybe Fl_Desktop_Overlay_Window?!

I totally agree, still, it would be quite some work for 1.3 IMHO.
Maybe we could first implement a toolbox window for 1.3, which seems to be the most requested feature with a thin caption, as a floating non modal, top z-order window, auto-hidden when not active ?

Sure, I have no problem with that. Fl_Toolbox_Window it is.

This STR has not been updated for more than 14 years. Is there still interest in such special window types?

Otherwise we should IMHO close this STR and/or open a GitHub issue (RFE) for this.
