Some gui toolkits have an option to show a grayed tooltip on inputs to enhance usability, FLTK already has tooltips why not show then grayed on Fl_Input when there is no value ?

Hmm, I dunno - I never liked that style, though I agree it is increasingly common.

It always causes me to pause whilst I grok whether I have to select that text to over-write it, or it will just magically go away by itself if I click into the cell...

In any case, it would not be that hard to implement as a derived widget if you want to try out that style in your own app, I think.

I would make that its own field. But that would violate the API.

I'm inclined to close this one "won't fix" as it's been three years now and none of us have go ten round to creating the patch...
